Ding Darling Fishing Report: Low Water Redfish

With a new friend visiting from out of town, I was put to the task of finding some decent fishing in the backwaters. A combination of cold front, wind and red tide had me a little stumped as to the best spot to launch the kayaks. After a scouting mission the previous Friday that yielding some monster snook sightings, but a bad case of lock jaw. I decided heading into the Ding Darling Preserve on Sanibel may be a decent option to stay out of the wind and look for a few redfish in the shallow grass.

We launched around 1pm just as the outgoing tide was starting to trickle out. After a decent push across a 6 inch deep flat, we slid into some deeper water. An hour passed with minimal fish sightings, but thankfully as we entered a converging point between several islands, snook, redfish and trout began darting out from underneath my Pro Angler.

The first spot yielded a few decent trout and two missed redfish on Hogy Swim Baits and Skinny Series. We made a move around again, but came up blank in several spots. Once the sun started to drop, we lucked out and got into a short snap and the fish decided to chew. After catching a handful of slot redfish and some nice trout we called it a day.
